Machinist Class I

This position requires the ability to set up and operate a wide range of CNCl machines unassisted. Adjust feeds and speeds to improve quality and achieve maximum efficiency with minimal tool wear. Must demonstrate and apply strong problem solving skills in day-to-day operations. Requires understanding machine functions, metal properties, and mathematics to handle a metalworking project from planning and fabrication through assembly and inspection. Must have the ability to work with specifications that often require tolerances of ten-thousandths of an inch. Reviews process for potential problems and opportunities for improvement and collaborates with appropriate personnel to resolve such issues. Must be able to effectively communicate and problem solve within a team environment.

Must perform the following daily tasks in a timely manner:
 Review blueprints, written specifications, or descriptions, or examine a damaged part
 Select the most appropriate machines and cutting tools
 Plan the sequence of machining operations
 Make required mathematical calculations
 Position and fasten the work piece
 Mount the correct type of cutting tool
 Set CNC controls
 Perform required operations of the equipment
 Return tools to designated area
 Clean work area to shop standards

Class I Machinist possesses the ability to make precision metal parts using manual machine tools and computer numerically controlled (CNC) machines such as:
 Lathes
 Milling Machines
 Drill Presses
 Micrometers and other precision measuring instruments
 Existing computer software to program machine tools

Class I Machinist must be 18 years old and have a high school diploma or qualifying scores on the General Educational Development (GED). A certificate in Machine Tool Technology from a qualified school or 5 years of on-the-job training is required. The position requires mechanical aptitude, manual dexterity, and visual acuity. Additionally, skilled workers must be able to work independently and be suited to do exacting work that requires close and continuous concentration. Machinists are expected to have their on hand tools and precision measuring instruments.
